Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, has called on motorists to observe strict precautionary measures while driving, following forecasts of heavy rainfall as the rainy season progresses.
The advisory was issued by Osondu Ohaeri, Deputy Corps Commander and Corps Public Education Officer at FRSC Headquarters, Abuja, on July 14, 2026.
In a safety guide issued by the Corps, Mohammed explained that driving in the rain carries heightened risks, as reduced visibility combines with hazardous, slippery road conditions. He urged motorists to take deliberate precautions to ensure they reach their destinations safely.
Drivers were advised to inspect their vehicles thoroughly before setting out during the rainy season. This includes ensuring that windows and windshields are clean both outside and inside, and routinely checking headlights, brake lights, turn signals and tail lights. Windshield wipers and wiper blades should also be checked to confirm they are functioning properly.
Motorists were further advised to keep their lights on both during the day and at night once rain begins to fall, and to reduce speed, applying what the Corps described as a “common sense speed limit” suited to wet conditions.
The advisory placed particular emphasis on tyre condition, noting that because road surfaces become slippery in the rain, drivers must ensure their tyres have adequate grip. The Corps described tyres as among the most crucial components of a vehicle, being the only part in direct contact with the road, and stressed that tyre traction is essential to a vehicle’s stability and control.
To reinforce these safety measures, the Corps Marshal directed Commanding Officers across the country to prioritise traffic calming, increased public enlightenment and improved inspection of wipers throughout the rainy season. He enjoined the motoring public to drive responsibly, with the message: drive to stay alive.
