NNPC retail unveils smart self-service fuel station in Abuja

By Onu Okorie

Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited NNPC Ltd, through its downstream subsidiary, NNPC Retail Limited, has commissioned its first Smart Self-Service Station in Abuja, introducing a technology-driven model that combines conventional fuel retailing with electric vehicle charging and other mobility services.
Located on Bill Clinton Drive, Abuja, the facility is designed to provide customers with a 24-hour self-service fuelling experience, allowing motorists to independently select the quantity of fuel required and make payments at any time of the day or night.
The development marks a significant shift from the conventional petrol station model as NNPC Retail moves to respond to changing consumer preferences and emerging trends in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum and mobility sectors.
The station was developed in partnership with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), which provided the land for the project.
Speaking at the commissioning, NNPC Ltd’s Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mumuni Dagazau, said the project represented another milestone in the evolution of NNPC Retail.
According to him, the Smart Station underscores the company’s commitment to innovation, convenience, operational efficiency and improved customer experience.
The Managing Director of NNPC Retail, Huub Stokman, said the facility was conceived in response to growing demand from consumers for quality products, competitive pricing, faster service, convenient payment options and broader energy solutions.
He said customers were increasingly seeking access to alternatives such as electric vehicle charging and compressed natural gas (CNG), while younger consumers were particularly interested in sustainable energy solutions.
“More than ever, we need to meet the needs of Nigerian consumers,” Stokman said, adding that the Smart Station was designed to provide a combination of convenience, technology, sustainability and value-added services.
The facility has 16 Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) pumps and two Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) pumps, with storage capacity of 180,000 litres of PMS and 5,000 litres of AGO.
Beyond petroleum products, the station has an electric vehicle charging facility with an 86-point capacity, deployed in partnership with Africa Motor Works.
It also features an LPG dispensing facility, modern lubricant service bay and fully automated car wash, while provision has been made for the future installation of CNG infrastructure.
Another major feature of the facility is its energy system. The station is powered entirely by more than 200 kilowatt-hours of installed solar capacity, reinforcing its sustainability component.
The facility also provides space for quick-service restaurants, a coffee shop and convenience store, effectively transforming the traditional filling station into a broader mobility and lifestyle centre.
The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, represented by the Deputy Comptroller General, Finance and Accounts, Saidu Bashir Daura, congratulated NNPC on the commissioning.
She described the facility as a model capable of encouraging increased investment in sustainable energy infrastructure and innovative transportation solutions.
NNPC Retail also commended the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Africa Motor Works, technology partners, contractors and other stakeholders for their contributions to the project.
Stokman said NNPC Retail would seek to expand the Smart Station model across Nigeria while strengthening partnerships with public and private institutions.
The company said its objective was to build a more convenient, technology-enabled retail network centred on changing customer needs.
The Abuja facility therefore represents more than the introduction of automated fuelling. It signals an emerging convergence between petroleum retailing, renewable energy, electric mobility, LPG, prospective CNG deployment and consumer-oriented services in Nigeria’s evolving downstream sector.
