Transmission Company of Nigeria TCN has dismissed claims by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company EKEDP regarding the cause of an electricity supply disruption at the Lekki Transmission Substation, saying the incident was linked to faults on two of the distribution company’s 33kV feeders.
TCN, in a statement, said it was correcting what it described as misinformation circulated by EKEDP on August 26, 2026, concerning operations at the Lekki Transmission Substation.
According to the transmission company, contrary to EKEDP’s claim that TCN’s T11 transformer tripped unexpectedly and was awaiting inspection, the actual incident involved the simultaneous tripping of EKEDP’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders at about 4:34 a.m.
TCN said the feeders tripped due to overcurrent and earth fault, resulting in the inter-tripping of the primary and secondary breakers of its TR1 60MVA 132/33kV transformer.
The incident, it added, was accompanied by a heavy bang and smoke.
TCN said its maintenance crew responded promptly to the incident, rehabilitated the damaged secondary breaker and restored both the primary and secondary breakers later that day.
However, the company said that when EKEDP attempted a trial closure of its Oniru feeder, the same relay indications reoccurred, leading to another trip and necessitating further corrective work.
The transmission company stressed that no outage occurred on its T11 transformer, contrary to EKEDP’s claim, maintaining that the incident was strictly related to faults on the distribution company’s Oniru and Agungi 33kV feeders.
“TCN’s technical team has been on-site, working assiduously to restore supply within the shortest possible time,” the company said.
TCN assured electricity customers affected by the incident that efforts were ongoing to address the fault and restore normal supply, while expressing regret over the inconvenience caused by the disruption.
The company also reiterated its commitment to strengthening the transmission network and putting in place a more robust electricity infrastructure to improve reliability and minimise future disruptions.
