Wike intervenes to resolve power disruption following invasion of AEDC’s C2 Maitama substation

By Onu Okorie

Abuja Electricity Distribution Company AEDC says the matter of the invasion and encroachment on its C2 Maitama Substation has now been escalated to the highest levels of the Federal Capital Territory Administration FCTA, following days of power disruption in Maitama and surrounding neighbourhoods.

In a statement issued Saturday, AEDC confirmed that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has been fully briefed on the situation and has personally stepped in to help resolve the issues behind the ongoing outage.

According to the company, it is now working closely with the Minister, the FCT Administration, security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to secure the substation, safeguard the critical electricity infrastructure, and speed up the restoration of power to affected customers.

AEDC commended Wike for what it called his swift intervention and firm commitment to resolving the matter, and reaffirmed its own commitment to restoring electricity as quickly and safely as possible. The company thanked customers for their patience and understanding throughout the disruption.

The C2 Maitama Substation is a key installation serving residential estates, businesses, diplomatic missions and government institutions in one of Abuja’s most prominent districts. AEDC had earlier said the facility was invaded and encroached upon, resulting in significant damage to electricity cables and other network equipment that made continued power supply from the site unsafe.

With the matter now before the FCT Minister’s office, AEDC says efforts are underway to secure the site and begin restoration work, though no timeline for full power resumption has yet been given.

One thing worth flagging for balance: AEDC’s initial notice attributed the invasion to “land grabbers” allegedly led by an FCDA assistant director, and at least one outlet (Sahara Reporters) has reported an unverified claim from a source alleging the land was sold by Minister Wike himself — a claim the FCT Administration had not responded to as of the reports I found. I left that out of the article above since it’s an unconfirmed allegation, but let me know if you’d like a version that addresses it.
