By Onu Okorie

Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC has intensified efforts to modernise Nigeria’s transport system as the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, joined the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajuddeen, on a high-level official visit to Cairo, Egypt, to advance the implementation of the Smart National Transport Databank Project.

The visit marked the next phase of the initiative following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology NITT and Asia Arab Investment AAI in Abuja on June 15, 2026, moving the project from the partnership stage to implementation.

The Nigerian delegation included the Director-General of NITT, Bayero Salih Farah, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Olufunso Olusesan Adebiyi, and other senior government officials.

According to the FRSC, the Smart National Transport Databank Project is designed to establish a comprehensive national transport database that will provide reliable real-time information for transport planning, infrastructure development, road safety administration, enforcement operations, crash analysis and evidence-based policymaking.

Speaking during the visit, Mohammed described the initiative as a transformative national asset capable of reshaping road safety management in Nigeria. He said access to integrated transport data would strengthen the Corps’ operational efficiency by improving crash prediction, traffic management, strategic deployment of personnel and resources, compliance monitoring and overall service delivery.

He noted that the project reflects the future of transport governance where accurate data, innovation and collaboration among institutions drive safer roads and a more efficient transport system.

A major highlight of the visit was the unveiling of proposed Driver Training and Development Centres to be established across Nigeria by ARCORP Egypt in partnership with FRSC and NITT under a Public-Private Partnership arrangement.

The centres are expected to improve the quality of driver education, promote professionalism among drivers, enhance capacity development and contribute significantly to reducing road traffic crashes across the country.

The Speaker also reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to providing the legislative backing required for the successful implementation of the project, stressing its importance to Nigeria’s economic growth, digital transformation and infrastructure development.

The Cairo engagement further underscored Nigeria’s determination to strengthen international partnerships, embrace innovation and deploy modern technology to build a safer, smarter and digitally driven transport system.
