Ancient Greek philosophers believed that human being is naturally political animals. This goes to explain that there’s always political undertones in actions and inaction of human beings. Nigerian political system presents a good example of that notion. In other environments competence, strength, good health and agility could be used as selling point for a politician to be voted into office as President however, Nigeria has a different mentality.
After late president Musa Yaradua’s death paved the way for former president Good luck Ebele Jonathan to emerge as a president from the minority region of the country, the calculation of some section of the country has been that history would repeat itself.
So in 2023 general elections elites in the North based their calculations for the person they would favour to emerge as president of Nigeria on who can either end in one tenure because of age factor, health reasons or a stooge on the seat of power.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his part played to the gallery with stories of sickness sorrounding him during the campaign to make his detractors who pretended to love him believe that he cannot be able to serve two tenures.
There were so many health issues around Tinubu in the public discourse during the campaign. At a point Tinubu was admitted to hospital in London at the same time with late President Muhammadu Buhari. During the campaigns, President Tinubu fell several times mostly in campaign rally and there was issue of parkinson’s patient associated with him.
And so the Northern elites thought of taking advantage of the situation and gave him very difficult conditions.
They made sure his running mate was a very younger person who would be running the government in the absence of the president. Also despite the fact that the country is religiously plural, Christian and Muslim which has been entrenched in every successive government since independence, in 1960 this time Tinubu was forced to adopt Muslim – Muslim ticket.
But to the chargin of all and sundry, immediately President Tinubu took over, all the stories about his health changed. He has been running the country with strength and vigour of youths. The last time he addressed the national assembly he stood for hours unshaken to deliver his speech.
He has also travelled virtually all the countries of the world, attracting investments into the country. And there has never been any lapses in governance as a result of any health challenges associated with him. However, this week in far away Turkey while on a State visit President Tinubu fell again.
Many have analysed the incident in Turkey from different perspectives but one question that is needed to be asked here is; can it be another political strategy as the next general elections is gathering momentum.? Can it be that President Tinubu choose to play to the gallery again in far away Turkey which is a Muslim country where the attention of the Northern elites and their thoughts would be focused in such crucial occasion.? Another question is, would there be any need to sway vote pattern through unconventional means again.?
Well Nigeria is a country where things are done differently from what obtains elsewhere, what is your opinion.?
