National Insurance Commission NAICOM has trained officers of the Nigeria Police Force NPF, Federal Capital Territory FCT Command, to strengthen enforcement of Motor Third-Party Insurance and other compulsory insurance policies as part of efforts to improve compliance and curb the use of fake insurance certificates.
The one-day training programme, held in Abuja, was themed, “Building a Culture of Insurance Compliance: Police as Catalysts for Protecting Lives, Property and Enhancing Public Safety.” It was designed to equip police officers with the knowledge and skills required to verify insurance policies, enforce compulsory insurance laws and promote public awareness of the benefits of insurance.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of NAICOM, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon described the collaboration between the commission and the Nigeria Police Force as crucial to strengthening compliance with compulsory insurance requirements.
He said public safety goes beyond crime prevention and law enforcement, stressing that insurance provides a critical financial safety net for individuals, businesses and public institutions against losses resulting from accidents, disasters and other unforeseen events.
According to him, the partnership will help reduce the number of uninsured vehicles on Nigerian roads, protect motorists and other road users, eliminate fake insurance certificates and enhance public confidence in regulatory institutions.
Gam-Ikon noted that the initiative is in line with the provisions of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025 and NAICOM’s mandate to deepen insurance penetration and improve compliance nationwide.
He also highlighted the strategic role of police officers, saying their daily interactions with motorists, business owners and members of the public place them in a unique position to promote adherence to compulsory insurance laws.
He said effective enforcement would contribute to protecting lives and property, reducing the financial burden arising from road accidents and strengthening public safety.
During the training, participants received practical guidance on the objectives and benefits of compulsory insurance, procedures for verifying insurance policies, identifying genuine insurance certificates and the legal framework governing Motor Third-Party Insurance and other compulsory insurance policies.
The programme also served to deepen collaboration between NAICOM and the Nigeria Police Force, with officers encouraged to act not only as law enforcement personnel but also as advocates of insurance awareness within their communities.
NAICOM reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to increase insurance awareness, improve compliance, discourage the use of fake insurance certificates and ensure the insurance sector contributes to Nigeria’s economic growth, social stability and citizens’ welfare.
The commission urged officers of the FCT Command to champion insurance compliance and promote a culture in which insurance is viewed not merely as a legal obligation but as a vital instrument for protecting lives, property, investments and livelihoods.
