NCS trains officers on new tax policies in joint programme with revenue service

The Nigeria Customs Service NCS has commenced a two-day training programme for its officers and men on the Federal Government’s new tax policies, in collaboration with the Nigeria Revenue Service NRS, as part of efforts to deepen internal compliance and strengthen Nigeria’s evolving tax administration framework.

The training, held, at the Service Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, drew participants from across the NCS hierarchy including members of the Management Team, Comptrollers, Superintendents, and junior cadres, reflecting the breadth of the compliance drive.

Declaring the programme open on behalf of Comptroller-General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi, the Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of Finance, Administration and Technical Services, DCG Kikelomo Adeola, said the training had become necessary in light of recent changes to the country’s tax administration process.

“As a Service entrusted with a critical role in national revenue generation, we must remain abreast of evolving tax policies and ensure strict compliance with our statutory obligations,” DCG Adeola said. “This training is designed to equip our officers with the requisite knowledge to navigate the new tax regime effectively and uphold the highest standards of professionalism and accountability.”

She stressed that tax compliance within the Service goes beyond a statutory requirement, describing it as a reflection of the NCS’s broader commitment to transparency and national development. “By investing in the capacity of our personnel, we are positioning the Service to adapt seamlessly to emerging fiscal reforms while sustaining public confidence in our operations,” she added.

Also speaking at the event, Assistant Director of Tax at the Nigeria Revenue Service, Victoria Udo, shed light on the practical dimensions of the new tax framework. She highlighted the Pay-As-You-Earn PAYE mechanism as one of the most dependable channels for collecting personal income tax and noted that compliance carries tangible benefits for officers, including access to tax clearance certificates and other financial opportunities.

Udo urged participants to engage actively with the sessions, share their experiences, and ask questions, noting that a firm grasp of the new tax laws would directly enhance the efficiency with which NCS officers discharge their responsibilities.

The joint training underscores the Federal Government’s push to harmonise tax compliance across its revenue-generating agencies as broader fiscal reforms continue to reshape Nigeria’s tax landscape.
